Usually, at the reception, the bride’s father is the first one to make a speech. He is closely followed by the best man and groom, and so the father-of-the-bride’s speech is usually seen as a bit of a warm-up act. Something customary rather than something that is eagerly awaited.
However, with a little effort you can make sure that your moment in the spotlight is something that will be cherished for years. If it is to be in keeping with tradition, your speech will need to contain some basic elements. Whether you intend to make it short and sweet, or to really linger under the warm spotlight, these tips will really help you…
Intro
You need to introduce yourself, but it doesn’t have to be reminiscent of your first day in school. Tell them your name, maybe crack a small joke or read out the lyrics of your daughter’s first favourite song… Make yourself feel relaxed and the weddings guests too. Formally welcome everyone, and thank them for coming, in particular, the groom’s parents too.
Something for the bride
Recall a funny anecdote from her teenage years. Follow this by telling her how proud you are of the woman she’s become.
The groom’s turn
Formally welcome the groom to the family. Read out a famous dialogue from a movie or a poem you remember, you can mention how you felt about him when you first met him.
Their life together
Now is where you impart some of your wisdom to the happy couple. Throw in a few light jokes about wives, weddings or life in general. The bride’s mother, your wife, could also join in now, and crack a few jokes about you. You both could now share tips about maintaining a healthy marriage or living a happy life.
